Sushil Kumar missed his father-in-law’s funeral in Jaipur because his GoAir flight from Mumbai left four hours behind schedule on Wednesday afternoon.
The delay led to a brawl between more than 150 passengers and the airline staff. “If we are late by five minutes they deny us boarding but no action is taken against the airline for delays,” said Kumar, a senior executive with the pharmaceutical firm in Mumbai.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was called in to handle the situation. The flight, scheduled to leave from Mumbai at 2:50 pm, finally took off at 6:40 pm. A GoAir spokesperson said that the flight was delayed because it arrived late from Bangalore owing to fog in the IT hub. “We had informed passengers via text messages and phone calls,” the spokesperson said. Passengers however, denied receiving intimation from the airline. “We did not get any update from them. Even after reaching the terminal they kept giving different responses about the flight status,” added Kumar who reached Kota in the wee hours on Wednesday after a further six-hour road trip from Jaipur.
Flight movements in the city was less chaotic on Wednesday as visibility was normal. An Air India spokesperson said incoming flights from Delhi were delayed by less than 30 minutes. Jet Airways cancelled a Mumbai-Chandigarh flight. At Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport, low visibility was enforced from Tuesday to Wednesday. But, not a single flight was cancelled, diverted or rescheduled
