Sufficient evidence to nail five accused in Mumbai gang-rape

Despite the case being filed a month after the incident, the Mumbai crime branch has built a strong case against the five accused in the gangrape of the 19-year old call centre employee.

The woman was gangraped at Shakti Mill compound on July 31 and the complaint was filed on September 2.

As evidence, the police have the statement of the survivor’s husband, who is an eyewitness, clothes of the accused seized from their homes, the woman’s clothes, her water bottle and part of her bracelet, which were recovered from the spot.

Officials said the articles as well as the contraceptives used by the accused have been sent to the laboratory for tests.

Niket Kaushik, additional commissioner of police, crime, said they had recorded statements of 2-3 witnesses who were told about the crime by the accused. Also, the crime branch has taken statements of the people the survivor and her husband had confided in, which will be presented before the court.

The missing complaint filed by the survivor’s mother at Bhandup police station will also be used as circumstantial evidence, officials said.
