If you are among the many Mumbaiites incensed by the noise pollution during Ganesh Utsav, you can now participate in the drive against noise pollution by putting your smart phones and social media skills to good use.

With the help of an android and Apple phone application that measures decibel levels, citizens can monitor noisy celebrations and post the data they collate on a Facebook page – Citzens’ Noise Map, created by non-government organisation (NGO) Awaaz Foundation.

The phone application, that is available for free on phones supporting android software and on Apple phones, is easy to use and gives a fair estimate of the noise levels in your surroundings.

The citizens can post the location, time, decibel levels and even names of the Ganesh mandals whose processions are flouting noise rules.

Other NGO’s such as Sprouts and Sanskar India are collaborating with Awaaz Foundation to take this campaign to college and school students.

On Tuesday, Awaaz Foundation will organise a citizens’ meet to discuss noise pollution issues and how citizen monitoring can be used for noise mapping in the long run, beyond festivals.

“People can get directly involved and utilise the phone applications to report violation of noise rules from their locality,” said Sumaira Abdulali, Awaaz Foundation.

“By involving citizens, the responsibility of countering noise pollution will be distributed. Activists often get targeted with allegations that they oppose festivals,” said Anand Pendharkar, president, Sprouts.
