Three elite units of the Mumbai police crime branch have been jointly conferred the annual Deepak Jog Memorial award for the best detected case in 2010.
On June 27 last year, the Property Cell, the Criminal Intelligence Unit (CIU) Operations and the Unit 6 crime branch had
collectively solved the murder mystery of senior journalist J Dey by arresting his seven assailants.

Those arrested in the case, including sharp shooter Satish Kalya alias Rothi Thangappan Joseph, who were allegedly deputed by fugitive underworld gangster Chhota Rajan, had allegedly gunned down Dey on June 11 at Powai.

The award was received by assistant commissioner of police, crime, Ashok Duraphe and senior inspector Arun Chavan on behalf of the three units, from the hands of former director general of police, Maharashtra, AV Krishnan.

The announcement of the honour was made by Mumbai police commissioner Arup Patnaik during the monthly crime review conference held at the police club, near Azad Maidan on Wednesday.

The selection for the honour was made by a committee of retired and former police officers.

For over a decade, the award has been conferred annually in memory of IPS officer Deepak Jog who died at a young age following a massive cardiac arrest.
