Balaji devotees in Mumbai who were hoping to witness the wedding ceremony of Lord Tirupati Balaji at the Tirumala Venkateshwara Temple in Andhra Pradesh will be able to  witness the auspicious ceremony from close quarters this week.

The Shanmukhanada Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha  and the South Indian Education Society (SIES) will conduct the Kalyana Utsavam (wedding ceremony) of Lord Tirumala Tirupati Sri Balaji with Goddesses Sridevi and Bhudevi at the SIES Nerul complex in Navi Mumbai on Monday, and at the Shanmukhananda Hall in King’s Circle on Wednesday and Thursday.

“Every year, the Tirupati temple sends its utsav murtis (replicas) across the country, and this time Mumbaiites will have the chance to witness the wedding ceremony. It is difficult for many people to visit the temple for darshan and devotees are usually waitlisted for years for the function,” said V Shankar, president of the Sabha and SIES. .

Over 60 priests and officials from the Tirupati Tirumala Deavsthanam will accompany the idols for the function. Apart from the marriage ceremony, the Vasantha Utsavam, or the spring festival, will be also performed at the Sabha on Tuesday where the idols will be bathed with holy water and sandal paste, which will be followed by special pujas.

All the ceremonies generally performed in a Hindu wedding will be part of the function. The Sabha had conducted a similar ceremony in 2008 in the city on a large scale that saw an attendance of over six lakh devotees.
