Congress MP from Sindhudurg, Nilesh Rane, son of state industries minister Narayan Rane, is in the middle of a controversy, with a Bandra residents’ association accusing him of high-handedness in getting a traffic warden detained for asking him to remove his vehicles from a no-parking zone.

Police confirmed the incident but denied that Anhita Lobo, the volunteer, was detained. On January 18, around 11.15 am, Rane’s car, along with a gypsy of his security guards and a police vehicle, entered 20th Road off the arterial Chitrakar Dhurandar Road in Khar (west). The vehicles were then parked on the curb, blocking the entire stretch.

Anhita Lobo, a Bandra resident and volunteer traffic warden who was stationed at the spot, then asked Rane to remove the vehicles. Rane confronted her, she said. “I was hounded by the security guards and Mr. Rane himself. He asked me – ‘Who do you think you are?” she said, adding that she was later taken to the police station for questioning and detained for hours.

Nilesh Rane was unavailable for comment. Industries minister Narayan Rane said, “I am not aware of this incident. Why is an argument over parking being made into such a big issue?”

Citizen activists, however, said the incident showed disregard for motorists. Anandini Thakoor, chairperson of the H West Federation, said: “Anhita has been doing her job diligently for years. It is sad that the police did not take notice of the fact that the area is accident-prone and has five schools in the vicinity,” said Thakoor.

“There was a tiff between Lobo and Nilesh Rane. It involved VIP vehicles, so we had called her to the police station for questioning,” said senior police inspector of Khar police station, Mangesh Pote.
