Two people have been arrested for murdering of 56-year-old housewife, who was found in a pool of blood outside her seventh floor apartment at Versova on Wednesday.
Vishal Tak, 20, a garbage collector, and Shivkamal Rajput, 20, a security guard, were remanded in police custody for 14 days after they allegedly killed Sebatina Fernandes.
The police have detained two more people, who are suspected to be Tak's accomplice.
Fernandes lived with her husband Victor, 61, at Mangela Sarvodaya Cooperative Housing Society on Juhu-Versova Link Road.
"Tak knew that Sebatina was alone at home as her husband had gone out to buy medicines. He went to her house with the intention of robbing her,' said an officer from Versova police station.
"Seeing the garbage collector, Sebatina opened the door and was about to keep the dustbin out of the house when Tak allegedly attacked her with a knife on the neck and fled after snatching the jewellery she was wearing."
The police said Tak was the first suspect as Victor had seen him with the garbage containers when he was returning home. When he saw Sebatina lying dead and ran back to the ground floor, the garbage collector was missing.
"We are yet to recover the 5.5 tolas of robbed gold jewellery she was wearing - a chain, a pair of earrings, a ring and a bangle - collectively worth Rs. 1.7 lakh," said the officer.
According to the police, Tak had been hired at the society eight days ago, while Shivkamal had been employed only two days before the attack.
Both weren't registered with the police.
"The secretary of our society is not in the city. Once he comes back, we will ensure that all senior citizens, domestic help, watchmen and other employees are registered with the local police and that we have CCTV cameras installed at necessary places," said Ranjeet Singh, 30, a resident of the housing society.
