The municipal corporation has completed fixing the valve on the 2,500-mm Bhandup-Maroshi main water line, a part of Maroshi-Vakola-Mahim-Ruparel tunnel, eight hours before deadline.

The corporation was expecting to finish the work by Wednesday evening, but the workers were done by morning.

This means that on Friday, water supply will be restored to the island city and parts of suburbs, which had been facing 10% to 100% cuts for the last three days.

As the work was completed before deadline, areas in south central, including Dadar and Tardeo, that were to suffer 50% water cut were imposed only 10% cut.

Moreover, being informed a week in advance about the three-day water cut helped because residents could make adequate arrangements.

“We called for a tanker on Wednesday. We hope to get regular water supply from Friday. Thankfully, it [water cut] had not been very difficult this time,” said Ashad Mehta, president of the Oval Cooperage Residents’ Association.

“Shortage of water and arranging for tankers are regular features in our area. We are used to conserve water,” Gul Asrani, a resident of Cuffe Parade.

The visit by Prime Minister Manmohan’s Singh on January 6 had forced the civic body to postpone its three-day water cut in the city. Repair work on the Bhandup-Maroshi water pipeline was scheduled for January 6 to 9, but was rescheduled to January 10 to 12.

The Maroshi-Matunga tunnel is one of the three tunnels the BMC is constructing across the city to augment water supply. The other two are the 3.6-km tunnel from Malabar Hill to Cross Maidan and the 6.1-km tunnel from Yerawali to Yari Road.
