Were adequate measures taken by police to handle a situation like this?

Yes, we knew there would be a big crowd and all necessary precautions were taken. Additional police personnel were deployment at the spot. Rajneesh Seth, the joint commissioner, law and order, was stationed at Azad Maidan specifically to oversee the rally, which shows how serious we were.

Has there been any clarity about what led to the incident, and if it was premeditated?

Our priority at the moment is to ensure the situation on ground is under control, and there is no law and order problem. The crime branch will investigate who are responsible for the protests getting out of control, and if the violence was premeditated.

Has the situation been brought under control completely?

The situation is 100% under control. Our men will be manning the streets for the next 24 hours. Those policemen who are on leave have been called in to work. We have appealed to religious leaders in sensitive areas like Pydhonie and Dongri to ensure that the situation does not deteriorate. We request people not to circulate text messages about rumours.

Caste politics to decide next Maharashtra CM?

The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) top brass has maintained that factors such as religion, caste and creed had no impact on the Assembly polls results, which were declared on Sunday. But some in the party are asking whether a coalition government, which will have members of different castes, will impact the selection of the CM candidate?
