The civic body has stepped in to make web browsing on your smartphones and tablets more convenient.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is working with internet and communication experts to enable unlimited access to wireless internet at public spaces across the city by the end of this year.

These Wi-Fi hotspots will also include BEST buses. A study is under way to assess the financial viability of the plan and decide whether the services should be made free of cost in selected areas or across the city.

“The project will be annou-nced soon. We are discussing issues related to security, monitoring and setting up towers to support Wi-Fi,” said city mayor Sunil Prabhu. The service was part of the ruling Shiv Sena’s vision document released during the 2012 civic polls.

The first phase of the project will cover south Mumbai, the city’s new business hubs such as the Bandra Kurla Complex, and education institutes including the Mumbai university.
