The decomposed body of a 50-year-old woman was found along the Eastern Express Highway service road at Kanjurmarg by police on Wednesday.

The police then informed other stations, after which the victim Bharati Jaiswal’s son identified her through her clothes, a black salwar and kurta.

Jaiswal, who hails from Vadodara in Gujarat, had come to the city with a family friend, Jaydeep Patel, to conduct a business deal with four acquaintances. Her friends are suspected to have abducted the two, murdered Jaiswal over money she owed them and fled to Uttar Pradesh with Patel. Patel escaped at Madhya Pradesh, made his way back to the city through Rajasthan and  filed a kidnapping complaint on Tuesday.

Jaiswal and Patel, a garment trader, met the accused in Borivli. The two parties may have fallen out over Jaiswal’s debts, police said. The accused then took the two to a room in Dindoshi and assaulted them, Patel later said,  and took away the two’s belongings at knifepoint. Jaiswal succumbed to her injuries after which the accused used Patel’s car to dispose of her body at the highway. Police have registered a case of murder and kidnapping and are preparing sketches of the accused. A police team has been sent to UP to track down the accused, and another to Gujarat to find out if Jaiswal was murdered over her debts.

“We have now detained a person who facilitated the deal between Jaiswal and her acquaintances to get more information about the accused,” said a police official
