A team of six women police officers and home guard has been formed to talk to every woman in Govandi to find out leads on the kidnapper of the two-month-old Shahid Ansari.
On Monday, Shahid was abducted by a burqa-clad woman from the health centre at Shivaji Nagar, Govandi, when his
mother was standing in the queue to buy medicines. The accused gave a 10-rupee note to the baby's elder brother Mohammed, 8, asked him to go and get her a paan and fled with the baby.
On Wednesday, Rajneesh Seth, joint commissioner of police (law and order) visited Shahid's parents and instructed the police to form a special squad to investigate the case. "On instructions of joint CP, we have prepared the team including four women police officers from Shivaji Nagar police station and two women from home guard to go to each house in Govandi to get leads on the kidnaper," said police sub-inspector Shivaji Auti.
The special team would try to talk to each woman in the area and find out whether they had noticed any woman moving about suspiciously in the locality or if they knew a woman who wanted a child.
"Women would be able to talk to another woman freely and may give out information about the kidnapper," said Auti.
"Investigations had hit a roadblock as the health centre did not have any CCTV cameras. The only way to solve this case is to talk to the locals and get leads," an officer from the Shivaji Nagar police station requesting anonymity.
