The Nagpur unit of Aam Admi Party lodged a complaint against the former BJP president Nitin Gadkari for allegedly threatening the income tax sleuths who are investigating into “dubious” funding by some firms that invested in Purti Group, floated by Gadkari.
According to available information, AAP members filed the complaint with the Sonegaon police on Tuesday night. The police have received the complaint and now seeking legal option on its validity.
On January 24, addressing his supporters at Sonegaon airport on his arrival from Delhi after relinquishing his post, Gadkari reportedly threatened the income tax officials, saying that nobody would save them when BJP came to power at the Centre. “Congress’s boat is about to sink and when our party comes to power, there would be no Chidambaram or Sonia to save them,” he had said.
Reacting to Gadkari’s comments, the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) Association sought an unconditional apology from Gadkari and demanded security for the officials handling Purti Group investigation. However, later Gadkari claimed that his comments were distorted. “I never threatened the IT department or its officials. I have full faith in the professional integrity of the department,” he defended.
Tukaram Vahile, the in-charge of Sonegaon police station said that the complainant AAP was not a victim of Gadkari’s alleged threat. “They are third party. We will seek the legal opinion in this regard and act accordingly,” Vahile said.
Even if the complaint can be made official, only a non-cognizable offence can be registered against the BJP leader, he said.
The AAP spokesman Girish Nandgaonkar and one of the complainants said that Gadkari’s statements amounted to obstruction of justice and as citizens it is their responsibility to register a complaint. “It does not matter if we are directly affected or not, what is important is that government officials were being threatened,” he pointed out.
According to Nandgaonkar, five members of AAP, including him, lodged the complaint as its party members were denied to lodge a complaint in this regard by the Mumbai police, saying that it had no jurisdiction as it comes under Nagpur police. It was then that local AAP members decided to lodge a complaint with the Sonegaon police as the airport comes under its jurisdiction, he said.
