There seems to be no end to the abuse children serving as domestic helps are facing in Delhi homes.
A 14-year-girl was raped and sodomised by her employer for two years before she was rescued from a Batla House home in south Delhi’s Jamia Nagar on April 10. Physical violence —slaps, punches and branding with kitchen tongs — started a year earlier, when she took up the job.
Mohammad Nadeem, 25, was arrested Wednesday for rape, sodomy and physical abuse. He also faces charges of treating the girl as a bonded labour — not paying her for her work.
After he raped her the first time, Nadeem threatened the girl with murder if she told on him, the police said. He raped her last week as well.
A graduate, Nadeem used to work with a private firm but is now unemployed. He lives with his mother and a sister. The father works in Dubai.
On April 10, the girl was beaten up by Nadeem’s mother, Juhi. “I ran out of the house and was rescued by a neighbour, who took me to her house and contacted an NGO,” the girl told the Child Welfare Committee. The panel has sent her to a juvenile home.
The girl belongs to Sitamarhi in Bihar and came to Delhi with her grandmother three years ago.
Medical examination confirmed rape but not external injuries. The CWC has ordered a re-examination for the injuries.
On March 29, a 13-year-old girl was rescued in Dwarka. Her employers had allegedly locked her up and left her with little food before going on holiday. Ten days earlier, a severely injured 15-year-old was found on a roadside. She fled an abusive employer.
