In 2005, the number of rape cases in Delhi had reached 660, earning the city the ignominious tag of the country’s “rape capital”. The number this year is expected to rise further.

The number had slumped to 452 in 2009. Last year, there were 572 rape cases in the Capital. Only 25 of them were not known to the victim.

In 2012, of the 661 victims, 55 were aged between two and seven years, 50 were aged between seven and 12 years and a majority (around 300) aged between 16 and 18 years.
