Almost nine months after the CBI arrested Suresh Kalmadi in the 2010 Commonwealth Games scam, the former Organising Committee (OC) chairman of the Games walked out of Tihar jail after the Delhi high court granted him bail.

Within hours of the bail order, Kalmadi, 67, left through Jail No. 4 without talking to waiting mediapersons.

Justice Mukta Gupta also granted bail to former OC director general and co-accused VK Verma, saying the trial was likely to take time. “There is no allegation that the petitioners are likely to flee from justice and will not be available for the trial,” he said.

The court directed each of them to furnish a bail bond of Rs. 5 lakh and a surety of the same amount before the trial judge. The duo can’t leave the country without prior permission of the trial court.

Kalmadi was arrested in April 2011 and Verma in February 2011 in the Timing, Scoring and Result system scam. Kalmadi had moved the high court for bail, citing the Supreme Court’s judgment in the 2G spectrum case in which it held that “bail is the rule and jail the exception”.

“There is no allegation of a money trail to the petitioners. There is also no evidence the petitioner is threatening witnesses or interfering with evidence during investigation or trial,” justice Gupta said, allowing Kalmadi’s bail plea.
