A whole flurry of action was taking place among Maoists and there were strong indications since April that they were planning something big and ‘spectacular’, say intelligence sources.

While there were no immediate warnings that they were targeting the leaders, including Mahendra Karma, who were to attend the Congress’ Parivartan rally, there were strong indications that the Maoists were onto something big, intelligence sources have told HT.

“We were expecting big attacks on camps since April. About 15-20 days back, a group of about 20 heavily-armed Maoists led by Sudhakar of the State Military Commission had entered the Bastar area. Besides Sudhakar, many senior Maoist leaders including Katakan Sudarshan alais Anand and Ganesh VK had been camping in the heavily-forested area and holding frequent meetings. We suspect this attack may be a result of these meetings,” the sources said.

Politburo member Katakam Sudarshan alias Anand is secretary, central regional bureau, CPI(Maoist) while Ganesh VK is suspected to have masterminded the Chintalnar ambush where 76 security personnel were killed in 2010.

“There were also reports that cadres from Maharashtra and Odisha had also sneaked in,” the sources added.

“The attack is also suspected to be part of the overall ongoing Tactical Counter Offensive Campaigns (TCOC) that the Maoists operate from mid March to mid June every year.”

This is the time when trees shed their leaves and forests in central India bear a depleted look. With temperatures hovering around a sweltering 40 degrees, it is time for the Maoists to step up their activities and run a period of declared offensives.

While the security forces' past strategy was to hold out and defend, from this year security forces have been taking to offensive strikes and taking the battle to the Maoist camps - a strategy that has been paying rich dividends.

This period of sustained offensives is also time for the top Maoist leadership to meet and take stock of developments, consolidate and devise future strategies.
