But the 26-year-old municipal councillor from Nangloi’s Ward No. 43, who committed suicide at her in-laws’s house in Nangloi Village, was allegedly forced into politics to fulfil her father-in-law Lala Ram Yadav’s wishes.

Satyam was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her in-law’s house at 8am on Thursday. Her one-and-a-half year old daughter Vanshika’s body was on the bed under the same fan. The child had been strangled.

Her elder brother Prashant Yadav, an NDMC school teacher, said Satyam never wanted to become a politician. “My sister wanted to be a school teacher. But it was because of her father-in-law that she unwillingly contested the MCD elections,” Prashant said. He alleged that Satyam’s in-laws had demanded Rs. 50,000 from them before the municipal polls. http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2012/11/09_11_12-metro3.jpg

“Lala Ram is a man of political ambitions and is closely associated to a senior political leader. He wanted to contest from the seat but it was declared reserved for women. Since there is no literate woman member in his family, he nominated my sister,” added Prashant.

He said his sister, who got married in 2010, was constantly harassed for dowry and was also made to suffer because she gave birth to a girl child. He alleged her in-laws were demanding Rs. 10 lakh and a Honda City car from them.

“Pawan and his family members didn’t treat my sister well; she wasn’t even allowed to make phone calls to us,” her brother alleged.

“Two days ago, my younger brother went to invite Satyam’s family for the naming ceremony of my son. Instead of welcoming him, they asked my brother about the money and the car and threw the invitation card in the dustbin right in front of my sister. She was very upset since that day,” Prashant alleged.

The councillor’s father-in-law denied the allegations and said, “Why would we force her to contest in elections if she didn’t want to?”

He added, “Last night, Satyam served tea to all of us and we all chatted for a while. Later, she touched everyone’s feet and went to her room. But this morning my son and daughter went to check on her and found her dead.”

V Renganathan, additional CP (West) said, “A case under sections 406 (Punishment for criminal breach of trust), 498 a (Husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 304 (b) (dowry death) and 302 (murder) of the IPC has been registered.”
