A window to HT’s series on the all-pervasive parking menace

Over the next two weeks, HT will focus on problems and practical solutions for the parking problem in Delhi. We will profile people, grill officials, talk to experts from India and abroad and feature success stories.


Day 2: Why you cannot park in your own colony. Case studies will explain the ever-increasing parking woes in residential areas. 

Day 3: Chaos in markets and public places. Case studies on how space crunch leads to over-charging, fake parking receipts.   

Day 4: It is not just about space. The crisis is leading to all sorts of crime, including murder. HT will profile people who have been victims of ‘parking crimes’.

Day 5: How all innovations have failed. No one follows stilt parking rules; multi-level lots remain deserted, while on-street parking creates mayhem.

Day 6: We find solutions to parking woes in colonies. ExpertSpeak: Bhure Lal, chairman of a Supreme Court-appointed committee, says residents must be made to buy parking space. 

Day 7: Way forward to deal with parking menace in markets. ExpertSpeak: Australia-based Paul Barter, a global transport expert, says Delhiites should pay 60 times the current parking rates.

Day 8: Use anti-theft gadgets, avoid parking at unauthorised lots. ExpertSpeak: US-based expert Christopher Kost spells out solutions to parking crime menace.

Day 9: Key lies in integration of lots. ExpertSpeak: Delhi-based expert Anumita Roychowdhury says an effective parking policy will also free up footpaths and ensure barrier-free walking and cycling.
