As his indefinite fast against inflated power and water bills completed the 13th day on Thursday, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal — a diabetic — is banking on naturopathy, meditation, rest and lots of water to keep himself going.

Doctors attending him on Thursday said his health parameters were within “normal range”.

He has, however, lost 8.5 kg since March 23 when he sat on fast at Sundar Nagari in northeast Delhi. His blood pressure was 111/73, pulse 64, sugar 131 and ketone 3+ on Thursday.

An ayurvedic expert and two allopathic doctors constantly monitor Kejriwal’s health and note his health parameters twice a day.

Tablets for diabetes were stopped a month before the fast and he was put on a vegetable and fruits diet for “to prepare his body for the fast”. He drinks about 7-8 litres of water.

Kejriwal’s day starts with detoxifying the naturopathy way. “Mitti ka lep (paste of clay silt from river bank) is applied to his abdomen and Enema is administered as part of the shodhan kriya (cleansing of the intestine),” said ayurvedacharya Vinod Sharma.

“I have also suggested meditation and deep breathing as and when possible,” he said.

For the past three days, Kejriwal has been talking as less as possible to conserve energy, said Sunita, his wife, an IRS officer, who stays with her husband through the day.

Dr Atul Gupta, an allopathic, explained: “In the absence of solid food, the body sustains on energy from liver for 24 hours. The next three days, it is the fat while from the fourth day onwards, body draws energy from proteins.”

Stating that Kejriwal’s sugar level at 131 on Thursday was “not bad”, Dr Anoop Misra, diabetes specialist, however, warned: “Ketone 3+ indicates  that the acid level in the body is rising. The body is drawing strength from the last of the calories reserved.”

“Acidified blood is entering everywhere and this will have a negative effect on all organs, including his brain. It is not at all advisable to continue the fast,” Misra said.

9.6 lakh Delhiites support us: AAP

New Delhi: On the 13th day of its leader Arvind Kejriwal’s indefinite fast as part of the civil disobedience movement, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) claimed on Thursday that the number of Delhiites, who have vowed not to pay inflated power and water bills, swelled to 9.60 lakh.

“The figure is expected to cross 10 lakh by tonight,” an AAP statement said.

A sarva-dharma prarthana would be held on Friday wherein AAP volunteers from all across Delhi will visit the venue at Sundar Nagari in northeast Delhi.

The second phase of AAP’s civil disobedience movement will be launched on April 6 wherein volunteers and people would break the law to restore to the houses the water and power connections that had been severed for non-payment of inflated bills. HTC
