Anarchy ruled east Delhi's Karkardooma Metro station on Saturday after a mob burned down a nearby banquet hall as a man was beaten to death over a minor 'theft'.

The rioters clashed with police, leading to several injuries and forcing the Metro authorities to shut down operations.

The incident was triggered when a cab driver, Rakesh Dayal, was allegedly beaten to death by bouncers at the three-storey banquet hall for picking up a few balloons from the premises.

Claiming that police were not taking action against the killers, Dayal's friends and family went on a rampage. Police, however, said they had already lodged a case and the mob reacted to unfounded rumours.

The riot left thousands of commuters stranded after all stations on line 4 between Vaishali and Yamuna Bank had to be closed from 4.20pm to 6.20pm. There were traffic jams at the scene, and more than two dozen fire tenders took more than an hour to douse the flames.
