A passerby called the police control room around 11.56pm to report about a man on fire near the auto market located close to Virat Cinema in Madangir.

The police rushed to the spot but a PCR van had already rushed him to Safdarjung Hospital.

He was identified as Satish Sharma, a resident of Tigri Extension in south Delhi.

Police said Sharma, in his dying declaration, claimed that two persons known to him poured kerosene on his him and set him on fire. But they also found a note from his wallet which, sources said, hinted that some persons had propelled him to take the extreme step, making it a suicide case.

The police have roped in handwriting experts to find if the note was written by Sharma or someone else.

A case has, however, been registered at the Ambedkar Nagar police station.

An officer said, “He was rushed to Safdarjung Hospital by a PCR van. A police team went to the hospital and recorded his dying declaration before he succumbed to his burn injuries. Doctors said he had 95% burns.”

The man was identified with the help of his wallet and his mobile phone, which were recovered a few metres away from the spot where he was found burning. Sharma is survived by his wife and three children who reportedly stay in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras.
