Top BJP leaders LK Advani, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday to discuss the face-off with Pakistan and the proposal for boundary settlement with Bangladesh.

The leaders reportedly took exception to the statement of defence minister AK Antony, which gave a “clean chit” and “escape route” to Pakistan by refraining from blaming the Pakistani army for the killing of five Indian jawans close in J&K on Tuesday.

The BJP team also opposed the idea of resuming any talks with Pakistan as retaliation to Tuesday’s killings.

The meet, which was called to discuss the boundary settlement proposal with Bangladesh by exchange of enclaves acquired a much more topical appeal.

On the issue of boundary settlement with Bangladesh, the BJP leaders told the PM there was opposition from West Bengal and Assam over the proposed formula to exchange enclaves.

“Stakeholders are not on board, and we are against going ahead with settlement without taking all concerned groups on board,” a top BJP leader told HT.

The BJP sees an emotive issue in the killing of Indian soldiers on which the government can be pinned down as weak and indecisive.

The Bangladesh issue is unlikely to find favour with the BJP as the exchange of territory with Bangladesh is something the BJP cannot accept as Bangladesh (particularly ‘Muslim’ immigration from there) has been an ideological issue for it, and, two, it wouldn’t like to help the government so close to polls.
