BJP on Saturday demanded setting up of a commission to probe the mysterious death of Jan Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in Srinagar in 1953, when Sheikh Abdullah was the chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking at a book launch function in New Delhi, BJP spokesperson Tarun Vijay said former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had termed Mukherjee's death a "murder under a conspiracy hatched by Abdullah and Nehru".

Vajpayee had accompanied Mukherjee to Srinagar but was asked to go back by the senior leader when he was arrested by Jammu and Kashmir authorities for demanding an end to the permit system. A permit was required to enter the state.

Mukherjee was demanding an end to this system, as well as the special status to the border state, which had a separate constitution, flag and head of state.

At the launch of Purabi Roy's book on Netaji Subash Chandra Bose in New Delhi on Saturday, Vijay quoted The Mother of Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry as saying that Mukherjee was "killed" and demanded a commission to probe his death.

Mukherjee Commission had been set up to probe Netaji's disappearance.

"Subhash Bose was the enemy no 1 of the British govt, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee was the enemy no 1 of the followers of the British colonialism. Hence, he became an eyesore for forces against nationalism," Vijay said.
