With the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) pointing out serious irregularities and lapses in Commonwealth Games projects executed by the Delhi government, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has started demanding the “immediate ouster” of chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta said the Congress high command should immediately initiate a CBI inquiry on the basis of CAG findings and remove the chief minister to ensure she does not influence the investigating agency.

In its report on the Games, the CAG has pointed to Dikshit’s involvement at all stages of the decision on use of imported luminaries, that led to avoidable extra expenditure of R31.07crore.

Though the Delhi Government claims that SpaceAge ---- the company that provided imported luminaries for streetlighting in one of three zones ---- was included in the bidding process on the directions of the High Court, the CAG observed that the company was irregularly declared qualified on subsequent reassessment, following his appeal to the CM.

Some other projects where the CAG has found irregularities in consultation, tendering and execution of works are ---- streetscaping and beautification, construction of roads and flyovers, renovation and restoration of Connaught Place. Dikshit heads the NDMC, which took up renovation work in CP.

Tabled in Parliament on Friday, the CAG report has come as a jolt to the 13-year-old Congress rule in Delhi, led by Sheila Dikshit, who went into a huddle immediately after the report was tabled. The Prime Minister-appointed Shunglu Committee had also pointed out serious irregularities in Delhi government’s role in preparing for the Games.

Meanwhile, Dikshit said her government would put forth its view on the CAG report before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). “All I can assure you is that when the CAG report goes to PAC… we will cooperate with them fully,” Dikshit told reporters.
