The BJP reacted sharply to Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi's Kargil remark and flayed the party for failing to control inflation and corruption, while claiming credit for economic reforms, including FDI in multi-brand retail.

“Did they (Congress) oblige the NDA by supporting us in Kargil war. That is the duty of every patriotic citizen to support the country's armed forces and the government at the time of a war,” BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said.

Gandhi had said the BJP should support the UPA government's economic policies in the interest of the country just the way the Congress had backed it during Kargil war when the BJP-led NDA was in power.

Reacting to Congress rally on Sunday, BJP's Arun Jaitley said it was intended to create a false image when the Congress had failed on the financial front and on providing clean government.

“It (Congress) has no idea on how to control prices and has rationalised diesel and LPG price hike. The Congress is rejoicing in the misery of the common man,” Jaitley said.

The BJP also accused the government of failing to address the issues raised by people regarding FDI in retail and said the policy will benefit only retailers and not the farmers.

CPI's Gurudas Dasgupta said despite the government pursuing economic reforms for a long time people were yet to see any benefits. “In fact, country is facing high inflation, recession and economic stagnation.”

The Arvind Kejriwal-led India Against Corruption called the Congress rally a flop show and accused the party of pushing the country into a ditch.
