Tasked with connecting too many loose ends, the Delhi Police on Tuesday said they cannot say conclusively about how many bullets were fired and how many guns were used in Saturday’s Chhatarpur shootout till they get the ballistic report.

The incident has brought in focus the importance of a ballistic report in solving a crime.

“Even if the bullets were from the same type of weapon, the ballistic report can confirm which weapon was used to fire which bullet. Since at least seven weapons, including AK-47 rifles, 9mm carbine, .32 and .30 pistols have been seized and over two dozen shots were fired, the ballistic report assumes importance to establish who was killed by whom,” a senior police officer added.

Till now, the police are following the theory that Ponty was killed by bullets fired from his brother Hardeep’s .32 bore pistol and Hardeep was killed by a 9 mm carbine, which was with Sachin Tyagi, the PSO of an Uttarakhand government official who went to the farmhouse along with Ponty Chadha.

“Each and every gun will be examined,” Vivek Gogia, joint CP (southwest range) said.

“We are not sure how many shots were fired and which gun was used,” he added.

Sources said that the guns that were seized will be used by ballistic experts.

“A test fire will be done by each gun and the bullet that will come out, will be matched with the gun recovered from the spot and from the bodies of Ponty and Hardeep. This will ascertain who fired at whom,” the officer added.

However, the ballistic report takes at least 15 days as the experts are already loaded with too much work.
