Posing as a good samaritan, an auto-rickshaw driver cheated several elderly people by offering to help them deposit money in the banks over seven years. On Saturday, he finally ran out of luck and landed in police net.

Deepak, a native of Panipat in Haryana, was arrested while fleeing with Rs. 6,000 in cash, which he had taken from an elderly couple from Hyderabad. The couple had reached a nationalised bank's branch in Nabi Karim to deposit the money.

Deepak, who was already present looking for a gullible target, stood near them in the queue before the cash counter. He asked them to join another, relatively smaller queue and started talking to them. Once sure that he had found his target, Deepak tried to mislead the couple by saying that they would require a photocopy of their pan card to deposit the cash.

"While Marsilimu, the complainant, was out, Deepak took the money from his wife K Balamani, offering to stand in the queue for her. The woman gave him the money but asked him to return it when she became suspicions. Deepak, however, escaped from the bank. He was chased by a police team and was caught," said Devesh Chandra Srivastava, additional CP (central).

"We have worked out six cases with his arrest," said Srivastava, adding that such complaints were on the rise in central Delhi areas in the past one month.

Seven years ago, Deepak had slipped away with Rs. 19,000 in a similar case, which emboldened him to pursue the crime.
