A gang of burglars struck at the Paharganj residence of a woman officer posted at the office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India on Wednesday and cleaned out cash, jewellery and valuables worth around Rs. 4 lakh.

Police said the burglars, who are yet to be identified, targeted the house between 1.30pm and 5pm on Wednesday when all the members of the house were out on work.

A case of theft was later lodged at Paharganj police station with the police launching a probe to identify and arrest the gang.

The matter, police claimed, came to light when the officer’s husband Balbir Singh Singhal — who is employed as a post-office agent — approached Paharganj police station and lodged a complaint. Singhal in his complaint said his wife and daughter left the house for their workplaces around 9am.

“Around 1.10 pm, Singhal locked the house and left for his work. The family members returned home around 5.30 pm and found that the entire house had been ransacked. Some jewellery items, which were kept in the house for the wedding of the victim’s daughter, and Rs. 1.10 lakh in cash were missing,” said a police officer.
