Incidentally, the area is in the Rohini zone which has been worst hit by dengue this year with 509 cases reported so far. The mosquito-borne disease has struck 1,026 people in the civic body’s jurisdiction. Last week, two senior medical officials of the zone were suspended for negligence in duty and the municipal health officer was issued a warning after rise in number of cases.

“The total estimated budget of the project is Rs. 596.86 crore. It will be built under the green-building concept and thereby will have provisions for fire-fighting equipment, lifts, water harvesting facility, air conditioning plants, close circuit television surveillance, access control system for security, solar water heating system and solar light,” leader of the House Mahinder Nagpal said.

The proposal for meeting the expenditure of the project will be prepared under National Urban Health Mission and will be sent to the authorities concerned, he said.

“The project should be completed in three years and work will start in six months,” Nagpal said, adding that the standing committee of the civic body on Monday gave its in-principal approval to the project.
Rekha Gupta, councillor of ward No. 54, said the decision to build the hospital was taken after a recent visit by the chairman of the standing committee.

“Senior officials, including additional commissioner (health) and other health and engineering department officials, visited the site along with standing committee chairman Ram Kishan Singhal. It is a 7.5 acre plot where there has been an ayurvedic hospital for years. However, it remains underutilised,” Gupta said.
