Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) has decided to build budget hotels in six DTC bus depots — Vasant Vihar, Sarojini Nagar, Kalkaji, Nehru Place, Sriniwaspuri and Raja Garden. The corporation is looking for concessionaires who will not only construct these budget hotels but also modernise and upgrade the bus depots as part of the project.

“There are about 40 DTC bus depots in Delhi and many of them are situated at strategic locations. That is why we have initially selected six depots at prime locations with very good connectivity,” said a senior DTTDC official who didn’t wish to be named. If the project is successful, the DTTDC will replicate it at other bus depots.“The budget hotels will be multi-storeyed and the depots will be upgraded to provide more space for their operations,” he said.
“While there are a number of luxury hotels in Delhi, there are not too many options for budget travelers. Even the ones that exist are concentrated in a few areas
of Delhi,” he said.

But would not living amid parked buses, maintenance pits, smell of engine oils and effluents bother the hotel guests?

“The entrance for the depot and the hotels would be completely separate even when built on the same land. The idea is to use the land available with DTC optimally, not run the hotels inside a depot,” he said. The budget hotels will come up as a public private partnership project. The concessionaires selected for the project will build the hotels on a design, build, operate and transfer basis.

“Since running a hotel is not DTC’s core competence, the concessionaires will run the hotels,” the official said.

The DTTDC has already started the process of identifying concessionaires for the project and expects work to begin as soon as they are finalised.
There have been plans earlier too on the optimum utilisation of land available with DTC, including the depots as parking lots and constructing hotels at inter state bus terminals.
