The Delhi Congress on Monday confirmed that singer Daler Mehndi, two sitting legislators, one former legislator, a former municipal councillor were set to join them.
Delhi Congress chief and MP from North East Delhi Jai Prakash Agarwal in a press statement said that Badarpur MLA Ram Singh Netaji, Okhla MLA Asif Mohammad Khan, former Badarpur MLA Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, former BJP councillor and chairman of public health committee Dr VK Monga and Bhangra King Daler Mehndi had expressed their desire to join the Congress.
“They will soon be admitted to the party,” Agarwal said.
Hindustan Times was first to report that these people were about the join the Congress and the party leadership was only waiting for a green signal from vice-president Rahul Gandhi before making the decision public.
Two-time MLA and election committee chairman of the Nationalist Congress Party Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, however, said he did not have any discussion with Agarwal in this regard. “Let the central leadership of the Congress party talk to me. I will take a decision only after talking to my seven municipal councillors and thousands of my supporters,” Bidhuri said.
Speculation is rife that Mehndi might be given the party ticket from a Punjabi-dominated locality.
On the other hand, Monga, a former BJP councillor is a well known face in east Delhi.
