Identified as Ravinder Kumar, the victim was headed to his residence in the Welcome area when he spotted the altercation between two groups armed with iron rods around eight pm near the 'Tent Wali Gali'.

"Ravinder was in casual clothes, which perhaps made the men think he was a regular onlooker who was intervening. He made the auto rickshaw he was travelling in pull up near them to enquire why they were making a ruckus at that hour," said an officer.

Kumar, posted in the VIP route division of the Delhi Traffic Police, said the men seemed to be in their twenties and the incident occurred almost immediately after he attempted to calm them down.

"I was trying to make peace when they started shouting and assaulted me. A minute later, one of them shot at me with a country made pistol. The bullet hit me on the left side of my chest. When they saw me bleeding, they ran away," the officer said quoting Kumar's complaint to the local police.

According to police, Kumar then made a call to one of his relatives who came to the spot and rushed him to the adjacent GTB Hospital. The local police were informed about the incident after receiving a call from the said hospital. Doctors treating him declared him out of danger by Friday evening.

"We have registered a case of attempt to murder against the men and are looking for them," the police officer added.

In a another incident, one Nadeem was shot at by bike-borne assailants in southeast Delhi's Jaitpur while returning home from work. Police said it seemed to be a case of personal enmity.
