Sandeep Chitania was wanted in 10 cases of murder and dacoity, police said. The encounter at the sparsely-populated area lasted for one hour and fifteen minutes. Police seized an automatic pistol and 37 cartridges from him.

Chitania, from Haryana’s Sonepat, was arrested from the residence of the owner of a property firm on Monday morning, police said. He was reportedly staying at the place for the past five-six days.

“Around 8.30 am we saw  many policemen wearing bullet-proof jackets gathered around a three-storeyed building. They first fired in the air and asked the criminal to surrender,” said Jitendra Kumar, an eyewitness.

“Chitania opened fire at the 12-member police party which retaliated by firing in the air to scare him. Two rounds were fired by Chitania while police fired six rounds,” said Karnal Singh, Joint Commissioner of Police (northern range).

Delhi Police had declared a reward of Rs. 50,000 on his arrest.

After opening fire, Chitania  fled to the first-floor residence and bolted the metal door. The property firm is on the ground floor.

“We used iron cutters to cut open the door. We found Chitania hiding in the bathroom,” Singh said.

The officer said they had information about Chitania’s presence at the first-floor residence of the proprietor of Jai Bhola Associates.

“Chitania was involved in five cases of murder, including two double murders in Delhi’s Aman Vihar and Haryana’s Hisar. He allegedly shot dead two men last November in Aman Vihar after he flew into a rage at a cultural event when a Haryanvi folk song he had chosen was not sung,” said the officer.

Singh claimed Chitania was planning to murder at least two people, including a woman in Sonepat. In the other case, Chitania was planning to commit the murder by disguising himself as a woman.

Chitania was also allegedly involved in the murder of one Sattepal Singh in Vasant Kunj.
