Cops arrest 7 for abduction, contract killing

The police on Wednesday arrested seven persons, including five engineers, from Vaishali area of Ghaziabad. The seven are believed to be involved in various crimes, including ATM robberies, extortion, kidnapping and contract killing and chain snatching, police officials said.

The police arrested Mohit Nagar, Mayank Tyagi, both B Tech (IT) graduates, Pradeep Kumar Singh, an MCA second-year student at Greater Noida, Bhupinder Tripath, a second- year B Tech student at a Meerut college, and Manish Chaurasia, a second-year BCA student.

Two commerce graduates Piyush Sharma and Monu Chaudhary were also arrested. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Raghubir Lal said the gang was involved in heinous crimes and wanted to earn money to lead a lavish life. Police said Nagar and Tyagi were experts in robbery and duping people during withdrawals at ATMs. Both the accused said that they performed at least four robberies from ATMs in Meerut during last two months.

Singh was said to be involved in kidnapping incident at Samaipur Badli area of Delhi on 30 Dec, 2008, and also received R30 lakh as ransom. Besides, Chaurasia was found involved in dozen cases of chain-snatching and narcotics at Indirapuram, RDC Rajnagar areas of Ghaziabad.

“Sharma is trying his hands in contract killings. He recently approached a dreaded criminal lodged at Muzaffar Nagar jail and was hired  to kill a businessman for R30, 000 on January 2,” SSP said.

The gang recently shot a car owner in Indirapuram area of Ghaziabad on December 20, 2010, and fled with his Innova-car. On December 16, 2010, the gang had kidnapped Subhash Lohiya from Indirapuram and made him withdraw R45,000 from his ATM and fled with his mobile.

“We are trying to take them on remand for further interrogations about their criminal background,” SSP said. Those arrested were in the age group of 20-25 years.
