Police said the bodies of the victims, identified as Ram Bahadur Thapa and his wife Pavitra, were discovered in a highly decomposed state after the local police broke down the door of their Giri Nagar house around 9:30pm. Both the victims were in their late 30s and hailed from Nepal.

"A team from the local police station was sent to examine the house after neighbours complained of foul smell emanating from their house," said an officer.

"The house was found locked from the outside when the team reached and the door had to be broken down. Two decomposed bodies wrapped in quilts were discovered stashed away in the washroom," an officer said.

According to police, local inquiry revealed that Ram and Pavitra used to run a Chinese food stall at Tilak Khand area and had been staying in different rented accommodations in the area for the past 12 years. The couple had shifted to the present house around 11 months ago.

Meanwhile, police said, the couple's present landlord Deepak Dhingra identified Pavitra's body but couldn't identify her husband's since it was decomposed beyond recognition.

"The bodies were shifted to the AIIMS for post-mortem examination after crime and forensic teams inspected the house. The precise cause of the couple's deaths cannot be ascertained till the reports come," the officer said.

Their landlord said Pavitra was last seen on February 13 and she had told them that  they would be leaving for Nepal the next day. The rotting smell, their neighbours claim, started coming a few days after the lock appeared on their main door.
