The skyline of east Delhi is all set to change with the Delhi Development Authority deciding to allow soon the construction of multi-storey commercial buildings in Karkardooma.

The DDA has agreed to develop Karkardooma as the Capital's first transit-oriented development (TOD) corridor.

Though the DDA has yet to give formal permission for the construction of high-rises in Delhi, senior officials of the authority said efforts were being made to allow taller buildings in TOD corridors after the Union urban development minister Kamal Nath hinted at it a few days ago. TODs are an integral part of the DDA's 2021 master plan.

Delhi's development in the past few years has been on the ring-and-radial pattern, with focus on road-based public transport.

As part of transit-oriented development, commercial and residential complexes will come up within walking distances of the mass rapid transit system (MRTS) network. The new policy will ensure city restructuring and optimum utilisation of land along MMRTS corridors.

DDA officials said the Karkardooma TOD corridor would be within walking distance of at least three Delhi Metro corridors: the existing Dwarka-Anand Vihar and Rithala-Dilshad Garden lines and the under-construction Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar line, which would pass through Karkardooma in Phase 3.

"Such TOD corridors will have everything - from office complexes to shopping malls, markets, hospitals, education centres and bus, taxi and auto-rickshaw terminals. These will be self-sufficient development areas," a senior DDA official said.
