Death’s ripples felt in Uttarakhand

The murder of real estate baron and BSP leader Deepak Bhardwaj has rendered many real estate businessmen in Uttarakhand sleepless. Bhardwaj’s company was building a township in Haridwar named Deep Ganga Apartments in the city’s SIDCUL area.


Spread over 20 acres, the project has 1,200 flats of which 900 have been built and sold. Of the remaining flats, 230 are yet to be sold and the rest are being built. A mall in the complex is also under construction. The township comprises HIG, MIG and LIG flats, priced at Rs. 40 lakh, Rs. 28 lakh and Rs. 18 lakh, respectively.

However, the SIDCUL area, in which the township is located, has come under a cloud, with the BJP alleging underselling of land to industries by the Vijay Bahuguna government.

What has many up in arms is the fact that several people with a criminal background have begun to invest heavily in Haridwar and Dehradun. SP, Dehradun said the police are keeping an eye on such people.

Meanwhile, a Delhi Police team, which was expected to visit Haridwar this week to investigate the murder, did not arrive in the city till Thursday.
