Delayed, and then made to pay fines

Not only were thousands of commuters delayed due to the snag that hit the Delhi Metro’s Blue line on Friday morning, many even ended up paying fines for no fault of theirs.

A snag hit the Metro line connecting Dwarka with Noida/Vaishali at 11.40am due to which services had to be run in three loops. Trains from both directions operated on a single line between Karol Bagh and Barakhamba, leading to massive delay in service and crowding at Metro stations on the line.
 
Problems for commuters doubled on Friday morning. A commuter had boarded a train at Noida to get to Barakhamba. He stepped out of the system after getting to know about the delay but had to pay a fine for entering and exiting the same station.

Another commuter had to pay fine for being in the system for more than stipulated 170 minutes due to the delay in service.

In last six months, four major snags have hit Metro services in the Capital. Of them three were on Line 3, while one was on the Gurgaon-Jahangirpuri line.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said services were affected on Friday due to a problem in an insulator on the over head electrification (OHE) between Karol Bagh and Ramakrishna Ashram Marg.

Commuters were evacuated from the train around 12.15pm at Karol Bagh after the technical staff failed to identify the fault.  “The problem with insulators remains unknown till it happens. There seemed to be manufacturing defects,” said Sharat Sharma, director (works), DMRC.

Similar OHE related problems disrupted service several times in 2010 before the Commonwealth Games. Failing to fix them locally, Delhi Metro had called experts from France.
