Airport Metro Express fares have been raised by Rs.30, the second such move by the concessionaire in two months.

A ride to Terminal 3 of the Delhi Airport from the New Delhi Metro station will cost Rs.150 for each ticket, while that to Dwarka Sector 21 will come to Rs.180.

The monthly pass (which allows 45 trips) has also been increased by Rs.300 to Rs.2,500 to travel between New Delhi and Dwarka.

The move by the Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt. Ltd has angered commuters. “Revising the fares twice in two months is a commuter-unfriendly move.

Surprisingly, the concessionaire did not issue any public notice before revising the fares,” said M Viswanathan, a banker who lives in Dwarka Sector 4.

The last time the concessionaire had revised fares was on January 23, when the Airport Metro Express services were re-launched after six months. The fares then were raised by as much as 50%.

The concessionaire, however, claimed the latest revision was in line with an agreement it had reached with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation.

“The current single journey fare is as per the original concession agreement of 2008,” said a spokesperson.

According to officials, the fare increase in January was because of the withdrawal of a discount.

Sudha Iyer, joint secretary of Dwarka Forum, an NGO, however, rubbished the argument.

“They ran the train service for just one-and-a-half years as it remained suspended for six months since July last year. After the re-launch, they should have emphasised on improving the service by increasing frequency and enhancing speed,” she said.

Around 12,000 commuters travel daily nowadays on the high-speed line, fewer than the number of people who would travel on the line before it was closed for repairs last year.
