According to his family, Khurana was taken to the hospital after he complained of uneasiness and later fell unconscious.

“He was brought to hospital around 3am with bleeding in the brain. He has been operated upon and the bleeding has been controlled. The surgery went on for nearly an hour and he is currently showing signs of improvement,” said Dr Rajesh Acharya, senior consultant, neurosurgery, at the hospital. Acharya was among the team of doctors who operated upon the BJP leader.

Doctors said that though Khurana was put on ventilator support in the hospital’s intensive care unit, his condition was better than before and he was responding to the treatment. “He will be discharged only after assessing his condition in the next few days,” Acharya added.

Delhi BJP president Vijay Goel was among the senior city BJP leaders who visited him in the hospital on Thursday.

Khurana was last admitted to the same hospital in April 2011 following a brain stroke.

The first chief minister of Delhi after the formation of the legislative assembly, Khurana was the founding member of the Delhi chapter of Jan Sangh  along with Vijay Kumar Malhotra, Kedar Nath Sahani  and Kanwar Lal Gupta, which in 1980 became the BJP. He was appointed the chief minister from 1993 and remained on the post until he resigned in 1996.

He was also appointed the Union minister for Parliamentary affairs and then tourism minister in the Vajpayee government and was later appointed as the Governor in 2004.
