The Delhi Metro has installed bullet-proof mobile security fortifications at three of its busy stations following a spurt in the number of commuters and an increased threat perception.

The Metro authorities, who plan 209 such portable enclosures at stations, began the installation process last month. The enclosures were recommended by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), a Metro official said.

Gun-toting security personnel can be already seen behind six such portable enclosures installed at the Rajiv Chowk, Saket and Malviya Nagar Metro stations.

Such fortifications are common in terrorist-infested regions and forests, and at police stations and VIP areas. The portable enclosures can be installed and dismantled quickly and without much trouble.

The enclosures are made of iron and can stop bullets. In critical situations, these give security guards an element of cover while they are taking positions. Such enclosures are installed at the Delhi and the Mumbai airports.

“The process of installing the mobile enclosures at strategic locations at all Metro stations will be completed by October,” said Udyan Banerjee, DIG, CISF. The mobile posts will do away with the need of sandbags at Metro stations.

Fitted with wheels, the enclosures — each about 4ft tall — consist of three plates joined together with hinges.

“The need of such enclosures was felt after the rise in commuter numbers. They will make stations safer,” said Hemendra Singh, CISF spokesperson.
