Metro ridership from the satellite towns of the national capital region (NCR) will be more than double in the next three years, a traffic survey conducted by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has said.
According to DMRC officials, currently an average of 3.10 lakh people board the metro everyday at 13 stations in three NCR towns — Noida, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad.
The total ridership from the NCR towns is likely to touch seven lakh once Phase 3 becomes operational in 2016.
About 1.26 lakh people ride the metro daily from five stations in Gurgaon, while 1.30 lakh people ride from six metro stations in Noida. Two stations at Ghaziabad—Vaishali and Kaushambi — together register a daily ridership of over 53,000 people.
In Phase 3, two more satellite towns in Haryana, Bahadurgarh on the Mundka-Bahadurgarh corridor and Faridabad on the Badarpur-YMCA Chowk corridor will come up on the metro map.
Besides, a small corridor (about 10km) connecting Kalindi Kunj with Noida’s Botanical Garden is also being built in Phase 3. These will increase the metro ridership in NCR by over 4 lakh people, indicated the traffic survey.
“A large number of people come to Delhi from Bahadurgarh to work in industrial units in Mundka and in various government offices in central Delhi. From Faridabad too, a large number of students and office-goers travel to different parts of the city. The traffic survey has shown that the average daily ridership from Bahadurgarh in 2016 will be around 1.43 lakh while it will be about 2.14 lakh from Faridabad,” a DMRC spokesperson said.
According to officials, the NCR has huge potential for metro expansion and the demand is also growing.
“The satellite towns in NCR region need metro expansion in a big way for smooth connectivity with Delhi,” said Anuj Dayal, chief spokesperson, DMRC.
The respective authorities are sitting on certain plans for which DMRC has already prepared detailed project reports.
A few months ago, providing some relief to the residents of satellite towns, the Planning Commission had given the nod to Delhi Metro to construct metro corridors in the region.
Earlier, the Delhi government had demanded restriction of DMRC’s operations within the national Capital’s boundary.
