Delhi Police on Friday night cracked its whip on errant bikers and impounded 14 vehicles and challaned 99 others for offences related to triple-loading and driving without helmets.

The drive that began at 11 pm in the heart of the city last night, continued till 5am on Saturday during which 787 vehicles, primarily two-wheelers, were checked.

Though there was no specific tip-off, the drive also aimed at discouraging youths from performing risky motorcycle stunts, a menace in many parts of the city during the night, police said.

“The purpose of the drive is also to stop youngsters from performing dangerous motorcycle stunts as they are life threatening, both to them and to others,” said deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) SBS Tyagi.

However, no case of drunken driving was found during the surprise-check spread across areas that included busy transit points like Connaught Place, India Gate, Barakhamba Road, Kasturba Gandhi Marg, Rafi Marg.

“The aim of the drive was to ensure safety of the citizens travelling at night. We have impounded 14 vehicles and challaned 99 others for not having registration papers, licence, for triple-loading and driving without helmet. However, not a single case of drunken driving was found,” Tyagi confirmed.

The drive was carried out by seven police stations.
