A 36-year-old ‘master of disguise’, allegedly involved in the Rs. 5 crore Defence Colony heist of last September  and evading arrest since, was nabbed from a south Delhi market, police said on Saturday.

Identified as Yogesh, a resident of east Delhi's New Usmanpur area, he was apprehended from the INA Market on Friday afternoon with Rs. 12 lakh from his share of the booty. This takes the total recovery amount made by the police in this case so far to Rs. 4.36 crore, said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south).

“Not only was he part of the plan, he was the man who had killed security guard Munne Singh, who was aboard the cash van. He and his associates, Vijay Nahar Singh, Hari Kishan, Deepak and Ranjit Rumal had waylaid the cash van on the afternoon of September 28, 2012,” said DCP Sharma.

According to police, Yogesh, who is wanted in 13 cases ranging from murder and dacoity to snatching, has spent around eight years behind bars and is adept at changing his appearance.

This time, police claimed, he had grown a beard to look like a roving ‘baba’ and, in order to elude police, stayed at temples, mosques and gurudwaras, spending most of his time on train travelling from place to place.

“During the course of investigation, more than 15 people were arrested and cash worth Rs. 4.21 crore along with jewellery, property documents and properties worth Rs. 15 lakh was recovered. MCOCA provisions have also been invoked in this case against all the accused,” DCP Sharma added.
