Overnight rains brought chill to the Capital though the minimum temperature was 12.5 degree Celsius, five degrees above normal.

The effect of the rainfall was seen on day temperatures with the city recording a maximum of just 17.7 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal but up from Friday’s 16.9 degrees.

The wind also made Saturday seem colder than Friday. By 8.30am on Saturday, the rain gauges in the city measured a total of 7.9mm for the overnight rainfall.

Met officials have predicted fog in the morning and a partly cloudy sky in the afternoon. The temperature could be between eight and 17 degrees Celsius.

The city experienced the coldest day temperature on Friday with the maximum being recorded at a low of 16.9 degrees Celsius.

Last month saw the minimum temperature come down to 2.9 degree Celsius on Christmas morning, the lowest for the season so far.

In the past 11 years except for 2010, the month of January has recorded the lowest minimum temperature at below five degrees Celsius. The lowest in the past 11 years was on January 8, 2006 when the mercury had dipped to 0.2 degree Celsius.

The record lowest minimum for the month was recorded on January 16, 1935 when the mercury touched minus 0.6 degree Celsius.
