Two people have died and more than 50 have taken ill in south Delhi’s NCERT Colony due to what is suspected as water contamination in the colony's underground reservoir.

Four-year old Sanjana died after suffering from acute diarrhoea at Safdarjung Hospital on Sunday. The hospital said the girl was brought dead. The minor was reportedly cremated by her neighbours as her parents and two siblings are also admitted at the hospital.

The other victim, Hari Kishen (42), died on Tuesday. He also suffered from acute gastroenteritis.

Residents of the colony on Aurobindo Marg claimed they have been getting “murky water". Many residents complaining of severe stomach infection are also admitted in other private hospitals.

The Centre Public Works Department (CPWD), responsible for internal distribution of water to the colony, has stopped the supply for the time being. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) supplies bulk water to the colony. It is then distributed internally through an underground water reservoir.

Residents claimed the reservoir was unclean and the covering had gaps. The civic agency has collected water sample; the report will be ready in three days.

Sheila Dikshit, chairperson of DJB, said, "Internal supply in this colony is not the responsibility of the DJB.  On request, the DJB has sent four water tankers in the colony."
