Two years after it was signed, Canada on Tuesday agreed to supply uranium and nuclear reactors, acknowledging India’s “non-proliferation records”.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Canadian PM Stephen Harper concluded the negotiations for operationalising the civil nuclear cooperation agreement. Three more pacts, including a social security agreement, were also signed after the meeting.

One of the largest producers of uranium, Canada has a frosty past with India on nuclear issues since it has been insisting on making sure that the end use of its uranium will be for civil projects.

But on Tuesday, it expressed support for India’s demand for full membership in the four multilateral export control regimes, such as the nuclear suppliers group.
