Head constables Surender Lal, 48, and Manoj Kumar, 38, constables Sheesh Pal, 28, and Avnish, 27, and home guard Sahab Singh, 45, had to be admitted in the Lal Bahadur Shashtri Hospital after Sunil Sharma rammed his Chevrolet Aveo into at least half-a-dozen police barricades near the Commonwealth Games village around 1.40am.

“Sharma was returning to his home in Vaishali Sector 1 from work and was speeding on the Hazrat Nizamuddin-Akshardham Temple Road when he lost control of his car after failing to spot the barricades,” said an officer.

According to police, the 27-year-old is employed as the manager of 7 Degrees Brauhaus, a restobar located at Gurgaon's Sector 53.http://www.hindustantimes.com/Images/Popup/2012/12/14-12-12-pg-03b.jpg

He was arrested immediately, and a test revealed that his alcohol level was three times the permissible limit, the police said.

According to the statement of the injured policemen, Sharma hit the brakes only after his car was dangerously close to the barricades. Such was the impact that the falling barricades injured five of the policemen and damaged three motorcycles parked nearby.

“One half of the vehicle then slid up the adjacent pavement before coming to an abrupt stop. Sharma was immediately overpowered by the injured policemen,” the officer said.

All the injured policemen, with the exception of Avnish, were discharged after being administered first-aid. Avnish, whose condition was stated to be critical, was later moved to the Deepak Memorial Hospital in Preet Vihar where he is nursing a fractured arm and a serious neck injury.

Sharma has been booked under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act and for rash and negligent driving.
