Talking to a soothing female voice over the phone may not always leave one with a pleasant experience. On a complaint lodged by a Narela businessman that his son was blackmailed and R2.55 lakh had been extorted from him, Delhi Police on Sunday arrested two extortionists. One of the accused used voice converting software to extort money from the young boy.

The duo, identified as Sachinder Jeet Singh (33) of Geeta Colony and Vaibhav Sharma (29) of Maujpur, were arrested near Nirman Vihar Metro station in east Delhi.

The police revealed that Sachinder used a Chinese mobile phone fitted with software that changes male voice to female voice.

Introducing himself as a girl, Sachinder would speak at length with sexual overtones with the complainant’s son and later blackmailed him saying that the conversation has been recorded and copied in a CD, which would be handed over to his parents if the victim did not transfer a sum of Rs. 2.55 lakh to his bank account.

“We have arrested Sachinder and his friend Vaibhav for running a ‘friendship club’ and extorting R2.55 lakh from the businessman’s son,” said Ashok Chand, deputy commissioner of police (crime).

The complainant’s son got provoked by a newspaper advertisement on a friendship club called ‘Hot Line Friendship’ and contacted the telephone number  given in the advertisement. The person who attended the call at the so-called friendship club asked him to deposit R1,900 in his bank account and complainant’s son did accordingly to become a member of the club, said police.

“Later, when Sachinder started blackmailing the boy on the pretext of defaming him, the boy deposited the asked amount in installments in the bank account given by Sachinder. The account was in Vaibhav’s name,” Chand said.

He said that the extortionist duo did not make any CD of the conversation but mentioned about it for extortion.

During investigations police got to know that Sachinder is a school dropout. In 2003, he was arrested in a case of cheating by Special Cell. In 2009, he along with Vaibhav floated the friendship club and since then has been earning his livelihood through this club. Around Rs. 7 lakh to Rs. 8 lakh has been extorted by him from about 40 clients.
